Behold Your King
Today's reading: 1 Chronicles 15-16; John 19:1-30
John 19:14 Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold your King!"
It was the last time Jesus would be presented to the public before His crucifixion and Pilate declared to the Jews that Jesus was their king. Half mocking and half fearful and uncertain. The Jews in the mob cried out that they only had one king, Caesar. What a crazy scene, they were rejecting their real king and claiming that the hated Roman emperor was their king. It;'s hard to imagine the hatred that had been inflamed in their hearts by Jesus but it was there and exposed by their rage and confusion.
But something stood out to me this time as I have been reading the account of Jesus' passion. The only time Jesus was called a king was at the end of His life. It's interesting how those who mocked Him with that title had no idea just how close He was to taking that title as His own in eternal glory. Yes, He was the King of the Jews, but now He is the King of glory and one day they will look upon the king their pierced and mourn for Him because they will finally know what they'd done to their king.
